Mindfulness

Mindfulness at Tuftonboro Central School

What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is knowing how to be in a state of attention, where you can perceive thoughts, physical sensations, emotions without judgement, doing so with curiosity and an open state of mind.
Mindfulness is focused and relaxed attention.

Who will teach mindfulness? Who will learn mindfulness strategies?
Mindfulness strategies and exercises are incorporated into our classroom guidance curriculum for grades K-6. Mindfulness “Camp” will afford students an opportunity to learn mindfulness strategies they can use daily to promote various aspects of their development including; healthy brain development, focus & energy, self-regulation (behavior), stress/anxiety resilience, and an overall positive mindset. Mindfulness Camp is open to all TCS students and staff members who wish to attend. School staff may recommend particular students to join, but attendance is voluntary.

Where is this Mindfulness Camp?
Mindfulness Camp will be held in Mrs. Scambio & Mr. Tetreault’s classroom at TCS.

When does Mindfulness Camp meet?
Starting September 24th, 2015, Mr. Tetreault will be holding Mindfulness Camp on Thursday mornings from 8:30-8:40am. Other dates/times may be added to accommodate those interested.

Why Mindfulness?
As described above, there are an ever-growing, research-based, number of reasons for why mindfulness should be incorporated into the student learning experience. It enhances all aspects of their academic, social, and cognitive development. Typical student outcomes include; improved academic performance, healthier social relationships, increased self-awareness/self-management, and stress/anxiety resilience (Happier, healthier students!)

“Mindfulness has become ubiquitous, especially in educational circles due to the increasing evidence that mindfulness specifically benefits the development of executive functioning skills, a greater indicator of student success than I.Q. and other traditional markers.” - Modern Mindfulness (2015)

“A growing number of schools are using “mindfulness training” in an effort to combat increasing levels of anxiety, social conflict, and attention disorder among children.”
- Greg Flaxman & Lisa Flook, Ph.D. (UCLA)
